Call for Papers: Poesi för barn och unga

Allt språk inleds i det poetiska, inte bara hos individen (”the language of infancy”), utan också i vår kollektiva språkevolution (“the infancy of language”), enligt Debbie Pullingers argumentation i boken From Tongue to Text: A New Reading of Children’s Poetry från 2017.

Call for Papers: Poetry for Children and Youth

All language begins in the poetic, not only for the individual (“the language of infancy”), but also when it comes to our collective language evolution (“the infancy of language”), according to Debbie Pullinger in her book From Tongue to Text: A New Reading of Children’s Poetry from 2017. From this perspective, a particular affinity can be found between childhood and poetry, metaphorically as well as in regard to developmental psychology. Literature, as we know it, springs from rites and ceremonies, and involves a rhythmically embodied orality, which conceptualises humankind’s most fundamental existential issues. The individual’s language development begins with a socially driven yearning for comfort and guidance in a world full of emotions, but void of concepts.

Lullabies and comforting hums of early childhood can easily be connected to this line of thought, as well as the somewhat later, and more playfully oriented, language games and rhymes. This also applies to the sometimes provocative oral culture of playgrounds and alleys that marks individuation and a different social orientation, as well as the teenager’s search for words to describe the earthquake of emotions that marks the entrance into adulthood. In all these transitional periods, poetry can fill our shifting and sometimes entangled needs for individuation as well as socialisation, due to its ability to address our embodied primary affects.

Despite the well-documented affinity between poetic language and childhood/youth, poetry for children and youth has received sparse attention within children’s literature research. In a specifically Nordic context, there are dissertations and anthologies that explore poetry for children and youth as part of their material, but even here there is a need for further study of the rich material comprised of the writings of e.g. Inger Hagerup, Halfdan Rasmussen, Lennart Hellsing, Siv Widerberg, and Gro Dahle. Barnboken: Journal of Children’s Literature Research therefore announces a Call for papers for a theme on mainly Nordic poetry for children and youth, explored through a variation of methods and theoretical perspectives. Articles on older as well as contemporary poetry are welcome.

Relevant topics might include, but are not limited to:

  • Language games and rhymes
  • Lullabies
  • Poetry in picture books
  • Children’s own poetry writing
  • Poetry with didactic purposes
  • The places of youth poetry
  • Song lyrics
  • Spoken word as a youth movement
  • Children’s poetry and oral tradition/”playground poetry”
  • Youth, poetry, and identity
  • Comparative perspectives on poetry for children and youth in different cultures
  • Authorship studies and studies of particular works
  • Children and youth poetry between media
  • Adult poetry as poetry for children and youth
